Today’s wriitng assignment is to devote 500 words to the most detailed description of a thing, person, or place that you can muster.
The most contentious thing about Foucault is his notion that we are controlled by our discourses. (I don’t find this contentious at all. I believe it be true.) It is up to each individual to be aware of the many discourses active in the world at any given time. Awareness can "defang" a discourse. We have numerous lenses. If we are aware of the idea that we are viewing the world through lenses, this gives us the chance to spot the discourses operating on us.
Today, Steve had the first year students do some Betty Edwards exercises. Excellent results.
I’m tutoring the first years for their storytelling/writing. So I spent an hour or so after this lecture chatting to some of the students about how to make their writing do what they intend it to do in the assignment they need to hand in tomorrow morning. Looking forward to the results.
Today Steve ran a writing workshop for his 1st year students, where they wrote drafts of a piece of flash fiction for their assignment.
A lecture in two parts. The first half was by Kate Lewis. Kate played a piece of music from the film, THE BLACK SWAN. The challenge was to identify DENOTATIONS and CONNOTATIONS in the music.
Gerrit Olivier delivered the second part of the lecture. Gerrit delved more deeply into how DENOTATION and CONNOTATION are at work in one of Zanele Muholi’s challenging photographic self-portraits.
This class is the practical side of Digital Arts. Here, students learn how to write, how to draw, and how to make games. Steve picked up on REPRESENTATION, going deeper into how adverts communicate, and how that has changed over time.
