I don’t know what An\u00e9 looks like, and she hasn’t given me her cellphone number. So I decide the best strategy is to enter the Mugg & Bean at exactly the time we agreed on.<\/p>\n
I walk in, looking as artistic as possible, and a tall, pretty woman stands up, smiling hugely.<\/p>\n
“Roy!?” she half asks. She’s seen my photo, so she has a rough idea of what I look like.<\/p>\n
“An\u00e9!” I say, and we shake hands.<\/p>\n
She flips open a little notebook. “You don’t mind if I write as we speak?”<\/p>\n
I say, “Go for it.”<\/p>\n
She’s a journalist on the Northcliff & Melville Times, and she’s interviewing me about my placing as a finalist in the Digirati competition.<\/p>\n
I haul out my palmtop computer.<\/p>\n
“What are you doing??” she asks, squirming under the focused intensity of my gaze.<\/p>\n
“I’m practicing what I preach,” I say, drawing her as she interviews me.<\/p>\n
When I’m finished, she looks at the piece, and says, “But I look ten years older!”<\/p>\n
“Most people say that,” I say. I really must try and make people look younger. But it’s difficult. Line work almost forces the issue. But hey. I’m not really going only for likeness. I’m hoping that my pics capture other qualities too.<\/p>\n
When the interview is over, I ask her where she studied.<\/p>\n
She says, “I did my journalism degree at RAU.”<\/p>\n
“Oh,” I say, “did Antoinette lecture you?”<\/p>\n
“Antoinette!” she says. “Yes! She’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen!”<\/p>\n
“She’s an ex-girlfriend of mine.”<\/p>\n
“Wow!” she says. <\/p>\n
